Controversial President of Central African Republic Has Resigned

After nine months of tumultuous rule, Michel Djotodia, the interim president of the Central African Republic, has stepped down. Djotodia was under pressure from fellow Africa leaders who said he was responsible for on going violence that pitted Muslim rebels against the majority Christian population, eventually sparking revenge attacks and widespread conflict. Back in September, Djotodia disbanded the Seleka rebel group (who are primarily Muslim), the force that helped him overthrow the country’s former president. The Seleka forces then ramped up widespread attacks on Christian villages, committing horrendous atrocities along the way. “Anti-Balaka” Christian militias then formed to fight off the rebels, sparking retribution attacks and additional violence that has displaced nearly a million people in CAR.
