When President Obama awarded 21 notable names with Presidential Medals of Freedom in November, we all thought that would be the last time he did it.
That is, until today, when he surprised Vice President Joe Biden with the award—the highest civilian honor. He was awarded the medal with distinction, the only person to receive that honor from President Obama.
Biden was clearly emotional and very surprised when Obama announced it, saying he had “no inkling.” He accepted the award and said that he did not deserve it.
“This honor is not only well beyond what I deserve, but it’s a reflection of the extent and generosity of your spirit,” Biden said. “I don’t deserve this but I know it came from the President’s heart.”
This was the second moment this week that showcased the relationship between the president and vice president.
