Activist that are working to help refugees flee the Syrian civil war have uncovered a terrible development: Using checkpoints, Syrian government forces are blocking the delivery of food and medicine to villages. According to this report from CBS News, there are even make shift graffiti signs that tell residents to “kneel to President Assad or starve.” In the story, an activist in one of the effected neighborhoods said, “It’s something just cannot happen in the 21st century—to see small kids dying from malnutrition and lack of food while you know that food is only five minutes away behind the Assad checkpoints.” A nutritionist with International Orthodox Christian Charities (that operates under the UNICEF umbrella), who works to assist refugees in Lebanon, told the news outlet that even when children and families reach refugee camps, malnutrition is still a significant problem.
