There are disturbing reports coming out of the Central African Republic, with several international humanitarian organizations warning that if serious intervention doesn’t take place, the nation could be “the world’s next Rwanda.” Since a Muslim rebel group overthrew the sitting government, the Christian population—which makes up a majority of the nation—has been subjected to war crimes and mass murder. Village leaders have begun to form their own militias to protect locals as reports of rebels indiscriminately killing men, women and children have been on the rise. Nearly 460,00 have fled their villages and homes since the rebels took to power, and thousands are taking refuge in Christian churches. Even organizations like Amnesty International—which does not frequently call for measures that could potentially lead to violent confrontations—has said that the U.N. must send thousands of African Union military forces to the country, to protect the victims of the horrific crimes.
