In a New ‘Black Widow’ Clip, Natasha Always Has a Plan

Disney has released a clip from its upcoming Black Widow, which will mark the first time a Marvel movie has actually been in theaters in over a year, which would sound crazy to anyone who just woke up from a year-long coma. But after Marvel’s big “welcome back to the movies” sizzle reel from a couple weeks back, it’s hard to not be at least a little excited about the promise of a big popcorn flick. And this one looks like extra fun.

Scarlett Johansson has been part of the MCU since all the way back in Iron Man 2 but it took till now for her to get her own movie. And if you’ve seen Avengers: Endgame, you’ve probably sussed out that this particular movie is actually a prequel, apparently set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. It’ll send Natasha on a spy mission back to the Motherland, where she’ll meet up with both old friends (played by the likes of Midsommar‘s Florence Pugh and Stranger Things’ David Harbour) and the villainous Taskmaster.

In the comics, the Taskmaster is Tony Masters, a rogue mercenary with “photographic reflexes” that allows him to mimic the fighting styles of anyone he sees. Curiously, Marvel is staying tight-lipped about just who is playing the Taskmaster in Black Widow. It could be a big name the studio wants to keep as a surprise, or perhaps it’s someone we’ve already met in the MCU. For all we know, given the studio’s love of flipping fans’ expectations, it doesn’t even necessarily have to be a man under the mask. We’ll see in July, when Marvel heads back to the theaters. Can’t wait.
