Greta Gerwig Will Write and Direct Two ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ Films for Netflix

It’s official: Greta Gerwig will adapt two movies based on C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix.

After closing the door to Barbie’s closet this summer, Gerwig will step into a whole new wardrobe full of fantasy and magic. According to a new profile in The New Yorker, Gerwig will write and direct at least two Narnia books for Netflix as part of the streaming giant’s long-awaited plans to reimagine the Chronicles of Narnia in multiple movies and TV shows. No word yet on exactly which books she’s looking to adapt, but we’re just excited to see some progress is finally being made.

Way back in October 2018, Netflix announced it would be teaming up with The C.S. Lewis Company for a multi-year deal. A year later, Matthew Alrich, known for his work with Disney’s Coco, was tapped as the creative architect for the development.

Since then, we haven’t heard much until now. Netflix was reportedly looking for directors last year, and it seems like they’ve finally found one. Gerwig’s work on other beloved childhood classics — 2019’s Little Women and this summer’s Barbie — is all the proof we need that she can get the job done.
