In celebration of Juneteenth, which just became an official national holiday, worship music collective Maverick City Music has released their newest project, Jubilee: Juneteenth Edition.
The album is a dual-sided feature composed of a live-produced gospel A-Side and a hip-hop/R&B/pop B-Side. Jubilee features a wide range of guest artists, including Ciara, Rapsody, Tama Braxton, Israel Houghton and tons more. There’s also a mixture of established Maverick City songs and new tracks, including “Joy of the Lord” and “Pretty Brown Skin.”
Lecrae introduces the album on the first track, detailing the history of Juneteenth and the importance of celebrating the freedom from slavery. He goes on to explain how the significance of Juneteenth can represent the celebration that all of humanity has been made free in Christ.
“And so in this day and age, we wanna celebrate everyone’s freedom. We wanna celebrate the reality that God created us equal, that we are all humanity, that we are all God’s children and we all deserve to enjoy, to taste and see that God is good. Nobody should have that deprived of them. And so that’s why we’re here today. We’re here to celebrate that, man, God’s people were set free. They were set free. Goodness and mercy pursued them and they were set free. They were liberated, and that’s something that we celebrate,” Lecrae says on “Juneteenth Intro.”
The album is an extension of their recently released album Jubilee, which was a celebration of the freedom Christ extends to His people, Naomi Raine told Worship Musician Magazine.
“As Christians we call people into our Jubilee, because Christ is our freedom from all types of slavery,” said Raine. “It was just an ode to what the Lord has done in the Gospel music community and through gospel music, and setting folks free.”
