LaKeith Stanfield Will Star in a Mysterious ‘Bible-Era Epic’

Fresh off his very entertaining Netflix Western The Harder They Fall, filmmaker Jeymes Samuel is hard at work on a follow-up. It’s called The Book of Clarence, it’s being called a “Bible-era Epic,” and it will star LaKeith Stanfield. That’s about all we know right now, but we don’t need much more to be intrigued.

“I want to tell the tales that we’ve never had before,” Samuel told Deadline. “We’ve never had Black people in the Bible days of cinema. There’s not even a template for us to go, ’Well, like that movie?’… Even when Andrew Lloyd Webber made something as nuanced as Jesus Christ Superstar, there’s no Black people in it, except Judas. Judas was the Black guy.”

If you saw The Harder They Fall, you may have seen an easter egg for the upcoming movie. Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) references the Book of Clarence in a speech to RJ Cyler’s Jim Beckwourth. That felt like a throwaway reference at the time, but apparently it was just a tease of what’s to come. The script is completed and Samuel expects to start filming this summer. “I’ll give you a Western and then we’re going to the Bible days. And then we’re going to go somewhere else, and I’ll go back to the Old West,” Samuel said. “And then nothing is going to stop me telling the stories that I want to tell. I have boundless energy and boundless creativity.”

Next up, Samuel is co-producing Teddy with Jay-Z, which will be directed by Kid Cudi.
