Taylor Swift Set to Make Her Film Directorial Debut

Well, this wasn’t on our 2022 bingo card: Searchlight Pictures has announced a new film is in development—and it happens to be written and directed by Taylor Swift. No other details (like plot, cast, etc.) were shared, but the project has us intrigued.

While it’ll be Swift’s first time directing a feature, it’s definitely not her first time behind the camera. She has directed several of her music videos, including “The Man,” “Anti-Hero” and “All Too Well: The Short Film,” which she wrote, directed and screened at both the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival. She’s also spent some time on the big screen herself, with small roles in Valentine’s Day, The Giver, Cats and this year’s Amsterdam. And we all know she can write.

What will be interesting to see is if her script takes on an ambitious plot by following in the footsteps of one of her favorite directors: Guillermo Del Toro.

Swift recently told The Hollywood Reporter she would love to switch places for a day with The Shape of Water director.

“Imagine having that imagination, that visual vocabulary and that astonishing body of work,” Swift said of del Toro. “To have such a diverse storytelling range but to somehow put your distinctive artistic fingerprint on every film. And yet, it feels like he’s still so curious and enthusiastic about his work. I can only imagine that a day in his mind would be fascinating.”
