Kanye West Won Every Christian and Gospel Award at the Billboard Music Awards

Award seasons come and go, and this year’s certainly started off with a hit. But since The Slap Heard ‘Round the World, award shows have calmed down and gone back to their regularly boring schedules, which is why you may have not even been aware there was an award ceremony last night.

The Billboard Music Awards are a big night for the music industry specifically, as awards are handed out based on music popularity — think songs you’re dying to escape from as opposed to songs you truly want on repeat. That doesn’t mean the music is bad, just that the awards have a different criteria. And sometimes that criteria works in favor of mega popular artists in smaller categories, like Kanye West.

West was up for six awards last at the BBMAs: Top Christian Artist, Top Gospel Artist, Top Christian Album, Top Gospel Album, Top Christian Song and Top Gospel Song. And he won all of them. West has won top Gospel artist and Gospel song for the last three years, and this is the second time he received the Top Gospel Album award. However, this is the first time he’s won the Christian artist categories.

West’s massive influence means he’s more likely to reach a bigger audience than most Christian artists. But inside the sphere of Christian music, where Maverick City Music, For KING & COUNTRY, Cory Asbury and more are receiving constant radio play, it’s still pretty wild that West would dominate the Christian/Gospel categories like this. Four of West’s songs were nominated in one category, increasing his chances of a clean sweep.

The rapper’s 2021 Donda might be the most vulnerable album about his faith. West raps about his struggles with mercy and forgiveness, trusting God through hardships and looking for salvation.
