Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers Just Want You to Know Their Cover of Goo Goo Dolls’ ‘Iris’

Promises made, promises kept. One hundred years ago on November 3, 2020, Phoebe Bridgers made a bargain with America: if President Donald Trump lost his re-election bid, she’d cover “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls. Well, Trump himself may not be convinced that he’s lost but pretty much everyone else is and that’s good enough for Phoebe. On Friday morning, she followed through and dropped the prettiest spin on “Iris” since you screamed the lyrics into your pillow after you found out your ninth grade crush kissed your best friend at Ben Jenkins’ house even though Ashley had told you that Garret had told her that she wasn’t interested in him.

Added bonus: Maggie Rogers joins Bridgers here, making for one of the most tantalizing indie songwriter team-ups of 2020. The whole thing is available on Bandcamp for a name-your-price situation, with proceeds going to support Fair Fight, a voting rights advocacy organization.

It’s been a surprisingly busy year for Bridgers, who released her second album Punisher and launched a label imprint called Saddest Factory. She’s got a four-song EP due out next week which will feature violin covers of a few Punisher tracks.
