Science Has Uncovered Wordle’s Best Starting Word

The Wordle scores aren’t populating social media with quite the same frequency that they were a few weeks ago, but metrics haven’t dipped much at all on the New York Times’ runaway hit word game. In fact, the Times has created a Wordlebot to score your guesses and offer algorithmic input on how to boost your game. And now, Wordlebot has compiled its info to deliver the surefire best starting word to solve Wordle in as few guesses as possible.

For what it’s worth, you may want to turn back now if you want to continue solving Wordle organically, without using a little mathematic advantage. Last chance…

The word is CRANE.

It makes sense. Two vowels, some really common consonants — pretty good way to get the landscape of the day’s Wordle word.

Of course, there’s no surefire hack. One of the little joys of Wordle is there’s no real easy way to cheat and, while a big vocabulary certainly helps, it’s ultimately a guessing game with a decent amount of luck involved. Still, if you want luck on your side, CRANE isn’t a bad way to start.
