Twitter Confirms Mass Deactivations After Musk Bought the Company

If you noticed you lost a few followers since Monday, chances are it wasn’t anything personal.

Twitter confirmed to NBC News that following Monday’s news that Elon Musk had purchased the social media platform for $44 billion, hundreds of thousands of individuals deactivated their accounts.

It may be hard to see on a small scale, but users with high-following accounts shared that they were losing thousands of followers after news broke. However, there appears to be a mostly political divide when it comes to losing followers this week.

SocialBlade, a social media analytics tracker, charted the difference between Democrat and Conservative leaders. Michelle Obama, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez all lost more than 10,000 followers by Tuesday morning. On the other hand, conservatives like Ted Cruz, Newt Gingrich and Laura Ingraham have gained thousands of followers over the last few days.

Twitter has stated that the “fluctuations in follower counts” came from “organic” account closures. There’s no official word yet on just how many accounts closed or opened on Monday, but time will tell what comes next for Twitter.
