Three Children and Three Adults Were Killed in Nashville Christian School Shooting

Three children and three adults were killed by a female shooter, 28, this morning at The Covenant School, a private Christian school located in the Green Hills neighborhood of Nashville.

The Nashville Fire Department responded to reports of an “active shooter” at the school Monday morning and confirmed that multiple patients were being treated, though the total number of people injured is currently unknown. Three children and two adults who were transported to a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds did not survive their injuries. The ages of the victims have not been released.

Shortly before 10:13 a.m., the woman entered the school through a side door and began opening fire on the second floor. Police arrived at the scene and heard the gunshots coming from the second floor. Nashville police reported officers did engage the shooter, who was killed by 10:27.

She was armed with two assault-style rifles and a handgun.

The private Christian school has an enrollment of approximately 200 students ranging from preschool to sixth grade, and was founded in 2001 as a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee tweeted that he’s “closely monitoring the tragic situation” and has asked for prayer for the school, church and community.

At a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the shooting was proof the ongoing need for stricter gun reform.

First Lady Jill Biden, speaking at the National League of Cities conference on Monday, told the crowd: “We just learned about another shooting in Tennessee — a school shooting.

“I am truly without words. Our children deserve better. We stand with Nashville in prayer.”

Monday’s shooting is the 129th mass shooting in the U.S. this year.
