The president’s anti-immigration rhetoric has taken an alarming turn.
In a press conference at the White House, the president said that he has instructed the military to treat rocks as firearms. “”I will tell you, anybody throwing stones, rocks, like they did to Mexico and the Mexican military … we will consider that a firearm … They want to throw rocks at our military, our military fights back. We’ll consider—and I told them—consider it a rifle.”
Earlier this week, a caravan of migrants from central America clashed with Mexican law enforcement at the border of Guatemala. During the standoff, some rocks and shoes were thrown at police. Police responded with tear gas.
Trump has promised to send American military troops to the border to prevent a group of several thousand of migrants from central America—who are slowly marching thousands of miles to the American border—from entering the country.
