After a social media hiatus, Bible teacher Beth Moore returned to Twitter with some reflections on the toxicity of social media culture and the necessity for Christian “civility.” Moore wrote a short thread about humility and self-control, quoting the famous passage from James about taming one’s tongue (James 3).
“We’re just not better than anybody else,” she said in one tweet. “That’s the long & short of it. That person you keep looking down on, you will soon be looking up to. That thing you swore you’d never do, you could out-do before the month is up. God is disturbingly devoted to the humility of His servants.”
Sometimes we’re too close to something to see how messed up it is. Last week I was off socials for several days at an event. When I opened them back up, I saw how sick they were. Beyond sick. Dangerous. If we don’t stop, potentially deadly. It’s time for a backlash of civility.

I like dialogue & discussion from varying sides. I enjoy some debate. I’m moved & confronted by strong & prophetic words. I like being made to think even when I don’t agree. I’m not looking for Mister Rogers neighborhood on Twitter nor IG’s picturesque. But it’s breeding abusers.

Twitter’s like the laboratory of a Victor Frankenstein social experiment. It’s producing freaks. Worse yet the worst claim to be Christians. Time for actual Jesus-follows (don’t buy that the nonstop verbally abusive are Christians) to revolt with a clear demarcation of civility.

James said the tongue is a fire.
It can either burn things down or light things up.
We will answer for our words.
