While visiting the Sardinian capital city of Cagliari, Pope Francis abandoned his planned message after hearing the stories of unemployed workers in the region. He was so moved by the testimony of a married father of three who lost his job four years ago and has been unable to find work ever since, he told the crowd, “I find suffering here … where there is no work there is no dignity.” He told the more than 300,000 gathered, “The world has become an idolater of this god called money,” and that “Men and women have to be at the center (of an economic system) as God wants, not money.” Following his message and telling his own family’s story of struggling through poverty, the Pope led a prayer for those seeking employment asking God to “give us work and teach us to fight for work” …
