A teacher in the New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward will soon be able to move into her own, state-of-the-art “tiny house” being built by Brad Pitt’s “Make It Right” Foundation and the FYI show Tiny House Nation. The home will be formally unveiled next week, just ahead of the decade anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed much of the area. The 496-square foot home is the organization’s first “tiny house,” which is being built to be environmentally sustainable with solar panels and other eco-friendly features. So far, Make It Right has built 109 sustainable homes for the residents of the Lower 9th Ward who lost their houses in Hurricane Katrina.
In an interview with NOLA.com, Pitt explained, “This is the definition of architecture: It is solving problems through design. And, again, we’re not talking about aesthetics; we’re talking about function, and that is the holy grail of architecture. So I was grateful, but it wasn’t surprising to me for them to jump in and want to tackle this and find solutions for this. Especially with everything we were witnessing on the news and the suffering of the people.”
