Sufjan Stevens’ critically acclaimed 2005 album “Illinois” is set to make its world premiere as a stage adaptation later this summer.
The production, led by Justin Peck, a Tony Award-winning choreographer, will be hosted by The Fisher Center at Bard in New York. “Illinois” will feature music and lyrics by Stevens, with the story crafted by Peck and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury.
According to the Fisher Center, the show will be an “ecstatic pageant of storytelling, theater, dance and live music.”
“Illinois” is among Stevens’ most popular work and features Stevens’ best-known song, “Chicago,” which was featured in the 2006 film “Little Miss Sunshine” and, 16 years later, used as the opening theme for Netflix’s “The Politician.”
The Fisher Center will host the production from June 23 to July 2, as part of their SummerScape 2023 programming. Tickets are available on the Fisher Center’s website.
