Last week, Saturday Night Live found itself in a controversy when cast member Pete Davidson made fun of former Navy Seal Dan Crenshaw. In the bit, Davidson made fun of the appearance of several mid-term election candidates, including Crenshaw, who lost his eye whiling fighting in Afghanistan. (Crenshaw ended up winning his House seat in Texas). Rightfully so, a joke at the expense of an injured war hero did not go over well.
This week, Davidson apologized and was joined by Crenshaw himself, who not only proved to a be a good sport about the whole thing, but had some pretty funny burns for Davidson.
The appearance ended on a serious note, in which Crenshaw talked about the unifying power of forgiveness, and discussed why it is important to honor veterans—as well as heroes like Davidson’s father, a New York City firefighter who died on 9/11.
In a time of divisive rhetoric and political venom, it was a really beautiful—and funny—moment.
