You may remember back in 2015, when Dr. Larycia Hawkins, then a professor at Wheaton College, posted a photo of herself to social media wearing a hijab.
In the post, she wrote: “I stand in human solidarity with my Muslim neighbor because we are formed of the same primordial clay, descendants of the same cradle of humankind. I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book. And as Pope Francis stated last week, we worship the same God.”
Initially, Wheaton suspended her because of what they saw as the theological implications of her statement. Eventually, the two parties “reached a confidential agreement under which they will part ways.”
The new documentary Same God—which is directed by a Wheaton graduate—looks at the events from Hawkins’ perspective, and the question of whether Christians and Muslims worship “the same God” as Hawkins’ post said.
