Trailer: Ron Howard’s ‘Thirteen Lives’ Tells the Amazing True Story of the Thailand Cave Rescue

In 2018, the world’s attention was riveted by the near catastrophe of a young soccer team that was trapped in a cave, and the international response that was mounted to defy the odds and save their lives. The tale is harrowing enough to warrant a film adaptation, and no lesser a talent than Ron Howard is taking it on. Thirteen Lives will follow the 12 boys and soccer coach who got trapped in the Tham Luang cave, and the team of experts (including noted heroes Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell and Joel Edgerton) whose skill, daring and ingenuity drove a rescue attempt so crazy it just might work.

Mortensen is coming off sterling work in David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future and you probably caught Farrell up to some dirty tricks in The Batman earlier this year. Meanwhile, Edgerton just wrapped a stint on Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, so it’s a pretty buzzy cast. In addition to the obvious cinematic thrills a true story like this holds, viewers may finally get a look at the actual strategy that went into an enormously complex and dangerous rescue mission. It’s one to keep an eye on.

The movie will hit theaters in a limited run at the end of July before debuting on Amazon Prime the first week of August.
