Belgian Man Wanted His Family to Appreciate Him More, So He Faked His Own Death

Prepare yourself for a tale of deception and family drama straight out of a MTV’s Punk’d.

Hailing from the land of waffles and chocolate — Belgium — TikTok influencer David Baerten decided to pull off the ultimate prank by faking his own death. But it wasn’t just for kicks; he wanted to teach his extended family about the importance of staying connected.

Baerten spilled the beans to his wife and kids so they could join him in the charade. One of his daughters even took to social media, pouring out her heart in a post:

“Rest in peace Daddy. I will never stop thinking about you. Why is life so unfair? Why you? You were going to be a grandfather, and you still had your whole life ahead of you. I love you! We love you! We will never forget you.”

Now, you might be thinking faking your own death to teach your family a lesson is a little extreme. Well, you’re not alone. Some of Baerten’s 150,000 TikTok followers didn’t quite see the humor in it. They argued that he had taken the prank “too far.”

Baerten defended his actions by revealing the deep-seated issues within his family. He claimed to be hurt by the fact that he was often left out of family gatherings and felt unappreciated. So, naturally, he thought faking his own demise was the logical solution. Because, you know, nothing says “let’s reconnect” like pretending to be six feet under.

“What I see in my family often hurts me,” he said. “I never get invited to anything. Nobody sees me. We all grew apart. I felt unappreciated. That’s why I wanted to give them a life lesson, and show them that you shouldn’t wait until someone is dead to meet up with them.”

Baerten has yet to release the full video of the prank, but in a snippet already posted, you can see the heart-wrenching scene of close friends and family gathered in mourning, unaware of the impending bombshell. He has yet to post the video where he arrives to his funeral in a helicopter.

“I swear I was crying, and then I had the shock, buddy,” exclaimed one friend at the funeral. “We love you very much.”
