Victor Hubbard had been homeless for three years, occupying a specific street corner in Kemah, Texas, when Ginger Sprouse finally asked him what his story was.
That happened in December, and with the help of Sprouse and the rest of the community, Hubbard is now on his feet and rebuilding his life.
When Sprouse asked Hubbard what he was doing and why he was there, he told her about his mental health issues, how his mom had left him on that corner and said to wait for her to return and how his only place to stay was on that corner.
Sprouse created the Facebook page, “This Is Victor,” to keep people updated on his progress and began to help him with day-to-day tasks—washing clothes, eating, helping him get treatment with mental health experts and generally taking him into her home and into her life.
In one of her initial posts, she wrote:
[lborder]I listen to people talking around town and keep hearing ‘someone needs to do something about that guy.’ So, I will be the organizer and I hope that we as a community can be ‘someone’ together.
[/lborder]She also launched a GoFundMe page for Victor that has raised $18,500 in the two months since it was created.
Sprouse, the owner of a company that offers cooking lessons and private parties, went on to hire Hubbard as a cook. She continues to run the Facebook page and continues to help him sort through things so that he can be completely independent.
Hubbard was able to reunite with an uncle and his mom recently. He said of Sprouse to KHOU: “She came around and she kind of saved me. She helped me. It’s like grace.”
