In His Face

My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, Lord, I will seek. (Psalm 27:8)

David seeks the Lord’s face in a number of Psalms. David was on a mission to find God and see Him up close. He craved a familiarity and intimacy with God. Seeking the face of God sounds fascinating, mysterious and wonderful. But actually doing it is a whole new experience.

As a child, did you ever get lost? I remember getting lost in a crowded mall. I saw tons of people. But I was only seeking one face—my Mom’s. When I was lost, I felt scared and confused. When I finally saw my Mom’s face, it brought me peace and comfort. I found something familiar in my Mom’s face, a face I could trust and know. In the same way, I often seek God’s face now when I feel lost and am in search of peace, comfort and the familiar.

I often seek my wife’s face too. Most often it is to kiss her and listen to her while we lie close to each other. This “seeking someone’s face” is about intimacy. It is about being close physically, emotionally and spiritually. Can you imagine wanting to be that close to our God?

I also seek God’s face when I need Him to love me, and when I want Him to know that I love Him too. Can you picture God whispering to you, “Seek My face”? God wants you to look Him in the eyes. He wants you to see His mouth speak to you. He wants you to see His tears. He wants you to see Him smile. He wants you to see Him laugh. More than His any facial expression, God wants you to see His heart.

Seeking God’s face sounds like an absurd quest. Who could ever be so honored to look into His face? But that’s exactly what He wants us to do. He wants us to search for Him in a crowded place. He wants us to seek Him out in the quietest rooms. He simply wants to reveal Himself to us in any and every way. Are you looking for Him?

Dear God, I want to see your face. Reveal Yourself to me. Let me be awed by your beauty and wonder.
