Netflix Will Add More Trigger Warnings to Its Controversial Series '13 Reasons Why’

BY RELEVANT TV May 02, 2017

After mental-health experts expressed concerns about the controversial hit series 13 Reasons Why—which is focused on a teenager’s suicide—the network has said it will add more warning messages throughout the show. Currently, the series features warnings before two particularly violent episodes and a short special about mental health after the finale, but, the networks said it will  “strengthen the messaging and resource language” throughout, after the backlash.

As Vulture notes, the show has been so controversial that New Zealand requires adult supervision for viewers under the age of 18, and Canada has even it banned it from being discussed in several schools.

In a piece this week about the show, To Write Love on Her Arms Founder, Jamie Tworkowski wrote

While we wish that the creators of ’13 Reasons Why’ would have been more careful in how they chose to tell the story, we are thankful for the good that is coming as a result of this story being told. We’re glad people are talking about mental health and suicide … As folks around the world continue to debate and discuss this fictional story, we hope you will remember that your true story is truly important … Life is worth living. The best is yet to come. Let’s keep going.
