Stephen Colbert joined Oprah last month for one of her SuperSoul Conversations. The pair discussed modern affairs pertaining to American politics and American unrest, and Oprah asked several questions about what informed Stephen’s sense of hope for the nation.
Colbert cited Matthew 6:27: “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” He explains that he encountered someone giving out a Gideon Bible on the streets of Chicago and when he opened the book, it fell onto that passage.
“It changed my life. I had lost my faith, I was so racked with anxiety. It was the first time I had read the Bible and I understood the phrase, ‘It spoke to me.’ The words of Christ are that for me. The words of Christ just speak off the page. There’s no effort for me to read them.”
