The long, long-talked about sequel to The Passion of the Christ will finally begin filming next year, according to the film’s star Jim Caviezel.
In a recent interview, he shared that The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection would begin filming in January 2024 with Mel Gibson returning to direct and Caviezel, 54, returning as Jesus.
“It will be the biggest film in the history of the world,” Caviezel said. “Mel [Gibson] took me through all of the scenes and I was on the floor crying […] it’ll be one of the best things you’ve ever seen.”
Caviezel also teased that it may not be the final film in the series. There’s potentially a third film that would be released, but it’s up to Gibson to make that decision.
The sequel to the 2004 blockbuster hit has been rumored for over a decade. (We broke down a timeline of events last year.) The original made $612 million and is one of the most successful R-rated films of all time, so it’s no surprise that Gibson and Caveziel are wanting to team up again.
That doesn’t mean the duo has been waiting around since 2004. Gibson most recently directed 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge, which garnered six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. Meanwhile, Caveziel has spent the past summer promoting his surprise box office hit, Sound of Freedom.
