It’s always fun when new directors can enter into established franchises and inject their own styles into the proceedings. Dumbo, the live-action remake of the animated Disney classic, is directed by Tim Burton, and that man is sure onboarding his signature look and feel. Check out the new trailer below:
It looks like a perfect pairing. Dumbo already was a bit trippy, but here, the floaty feelings of the original come off as more wondrous and striking. There’s certainly a dark edge to everything—Michael Keaton’s character in particular reeks of “up to no good”—and Danny DeVito’s physicality is given a sharper outline thanks to the makeup crew, but it highlights the colors and lights in a way that makes the whole thing fantastic and dreamy. This movie looks like a vibe. We’re excited.
What’s more, the story is probably going to be expanded in this new version to include more of the circus characters. Colin Farrell plays the father of two children tasked to look after Dumbo, and he’ll clash with DeVito’s circus owner and Keaton’s entertainment mogul over how to treat the animal in regards to its special talents and ability to attract paying customers. This one will be a lot more than an elephant, it seems.
We’ll finally be able to see Tim Burton’s Dumbo when it hits theaters March 29, 2019.
