And the Result of Groundhog Day Is … Wrong 60 Percent of the Time

In devastating news, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning, which means the country’s got six more weeks of winter to push through.

That is, if we can put our trust in a groundhog that science has found isn’t the most trustworthy. In fact, he’s only been right 40 percent of the time.

The idea behind Groundhog Day is that if the groundhog sees its shadow on Feb. 2nd, it means there will be six more weeks of winter. The reasoning behind this is that groundhogs hibernate during the winter, and when they peek their furry noses out and see their shadow, they’ll go back into their burrows to continue their hibernation. Otherwise, if they don’t see their shadow they’ll come out of hibernation to enjoy the spring.

Sadly, it turns out Punxsutawney Phil is less accurate than flipping a coin.
