Brace yourself, TikTokers, because the app has just launched a new feature that could change the game for creators.
TikTok’s new “Series” feature lets eligible creators post premium content behind a paywall, meaning viewers will have to pay for access. (We’ll forgive you if you think that sounds exactly like OnlyFans.)
Series is currently only available to select creators, with more applications to join opening in the coming months. This new monetization feature adds another way for creators to earn money for their content on the app, which is good news for those who have been tirelessly creating content without making a dime (which is almost everyone).
The feature allows creators to post up to 80 videos, each up to 20 minutes long, giving them more time and flexibility to showcase their skills in cooking demos, beauty tutorials, educational content, comedy sketches and more. Creators can select the price for their Series that they believe best reflects the value of their exclusive content.
And while creators will be able to keep 100 percent of their earnings after applicable fees for a limited time, a spokesperson for TikTok shared the company will start taking a cut in the near future. The company didn’t say how much the cut will be.
TikTok is also still considering a revamped creator fund that would better pay creators for popular videos. Many have criticized the original fund, saying it limits how much content creators can earn. The original fund, which launched back in 2020, was a three-year, $1 billion pool of money that paid creators for popular videos, although it often received criticism for paying creators next to nothing even when their videos received millions of views.
Many TikTokers are hoping these new steps will help ensure creators are being fairly compensated and catch up to Instagram and Youtube.
