Never Forget About Christian Clown Ministry

Every Halloween, there are a few costumes we can always count on seeing: vampires, zombies, frankensteins, and clowns. While most people break out the clown costumes for one night only, some Jesus-loving clowns wear their costumes proudly all year round. We are of course talking about Clowns for Christ, the clown ministry that began in the 80s and still remains today.

One TikToker, @katherines_diary, found an old Clown Ministry Handbook recently and has been sharing its content with the Internet.

There’s so many unbelievable parts in this handbook and we are grateful Katherine is sharing it with the world. Because we all need to know that “Clown ministry is often justified with Scripture, such as ‘we are fools for Christ’s sake.’”

Katherine has made numerous videos regarding the book’s content, and each section is better than the last.

And, through a bit of Internet sleuthing, there is a nearly 90-minute long video available on YouTube of some of the Christian skits acted out by actual clowns. From how to be a clown in a congregation’s worship service to cheering up the elderly with tiny umbrellas, the videos are something you have to see to believe. And, of course, “believe” is the name of the game in clown ministry.

The instructional video is narrated by Rev. Floyd Shaffer, a pioneer for the Christian Clown Community. Shaffer offers some sage advice for anyone who isn’t just looking to clown around (we had to), including our personal favorite, the CSV (Clown Standard Version) of Matthew 25: “If they’re in need of touch, you touch them. If they’re in need of a smile, you give them a smile.”

So, if you’re looking for a last minute costume for this year’s Halloween and don’t want to be a regular clown, why not be a Clown for Christ?
